Compulsive Phone Usage
Oct 19, 2025 · Essay.
The reason why you can’t stop scrolling your phone is because you’re arrogant.
You think for some reason that your little animal brain has enough willpower and motivation to just resist all the urges you feel in this life and because of that you’re doomed to submit to them.
For some reason we have this idea that “addicts” and “users” are separate from us.
As if they are a separate human class.
“I could never be an addict/criminal/etc.”
Nope, not true.
You’re made of the same flesh and blood as every other person on this planet and in that sense, you’re just not special.
That which has addicted others or led others to commit crime or fall short on their responsibilities in life can do the same for you.
And while this may feel like an extreme dive from talking about your phone, I think it’s perfectly appropriate to introduce a valuable insight:
Your ego is the reason for your constant failure to integrate positive, healthy behaviours.
You keep thinking that since you aren’t the “type” of person who would fall victim to certain behaviors, addictions, ways of thinking, you don’t need any help.
You think you can just grit your teeth and do better.
And that might work when you encounter large life changes like starting a family or getting a new job or moving cities…
It probably won’t.
The most likely outcome is that you just spend your life in the same negative feedback loop engaging in the same behaviors feeling the same shame about yourself, all in order to protect your fragile little ego from having to utter the words “maybe I could use some help.”
“I can do this all on my own”
Maybe… but who gives a shit?
Honestly, at the end of your life when you’re lying on your deathbed, what are you going to do, gather everyone around and go “I did this on my own without any help!!”
It makes you sound kind of pathetic because first:
No one cares.
And second:
It’s not true.
You’ve received help in so many areas of your life already (you know the whole “being born” thing was a pretty big help from your parents.)
So imagine a world where instead of being proud of how you can grit your teeth and no scroll your phone for like a day or two, you have a lifestyle that has already taken distractions out of it.
You don’t even spend energy resisting the urge, because your phone is locked away or you have filters on it.
And when others call you “weak” for doing something that makes it seem like “oh, what, you just can’t handle having instagram on your phone? What are you, addicted?”
You think, “wow, what loser. Can’t imagine how much time and energy he wastes on a daily basis.”
And then you just move the fuck on with your day and pursue your goals with peace and clarity.
