You Dont Have to Engage
Feb 3, 2026 · From my email newsletter.
I was just feeling pretty down about myself.
And when I get down on myself based on my conditioning, I have this tendency to want to scroll my phone.
I want to go on social media.
I think it gives me a sense of comfort and control.
it’s an avoidant strategy that I used to use for my entire life in order to avoid negative emotions.
The negative emotions that I’m feeling right now are just due to the fact that I’m building something that I genuinely believe in so much, but there are gaps in my own personal skillset.
And it is tough when you are accumulating the skills necessary to do something that you genuinely believe in.
It inherently implies that you don’t know how to do those things yet,
which means you have gaps, and those gaps don’t provide the outcome that you are desiring.
It’s pretty often when we don’t get an outcome that we want, we feel some sort of negative emotion.
More than that, and I know you know this, it is very common to engage in behaviors that are intended to make you feel better that… well.. don’t.
Doomscrolling is a big one that’s been showing up recently in the people jumping on calls with me asking for help.
In this email I want to remind you that you don’t have to engage with these urges.
Instead, you can put the phone down and get back to what you need or want to be doing.
For example, I’m gonna go surf a wave in front of my airbnb in Chile right now.
Instead of reaching for a negative coping mechanism, that’s gonna be the way that I handle this low emotion.
You too can rationalize the feelings that lead you to scroll and waste time.
You can recognize that it’s just an emotion in the moment.
You can identify what the urge to scroll is actually trying to do for you in that moment (like numb or escape)
You can reframe it.
You can move through it.
And if sometimes it feels like you actually can’t,
That you’re doomed to just keep wasting your time,
I have a workshop to help you with exactly this.
I ran it last week and since it went well, I’ll be hosting it again in 2 weeks.
